The Lord of FliesJoin now to read essay The Lord of FliesIt was 48 years ago when a man named William Golding, put his pen to his paper and composed a literary masterpiece called, Lord of the Flies. The book brings together every boy’s fantasy of being isolated on a deserted island and the harsh reality of human nature. With no authority, evil, hatred and pure savagery will no doubt take their toll.

Taking place during World War II, a plane full of English schoolboys crashes and the boys that survive swim to the shore of a nearby island. At first the boys have good intentions. They have decided to keep a fire going so that someone can see the smoke and rescue them, however because of lack of interest, the good intentions that some of the boys had, were quickly put aside for more exciting things. The hunting of a pig slowly began to take over the boys life, and the first sign of a major change in the minds of the boys comes from Jack, the elected leader of the hunters, after he can no longer live with himself, because he could not bring himself to slaughter the first pig he comes across. Soon the leader of the whole group, Ralph, is forced to split everyone up into separate groups because a ship doesn’t spot the signal fire that Jack and his hunters neglected to replenish while off making their first kill. This causes the first separation of power in the book, because Ralph finds that no one is willing to stick to the tasks that he has assigned.

The first sign of symbolism in the book is when one of the little boys, also known as the littluns, tells the group that he saw “A snake-thing. Ever so big” (p 35). This puts the group into an uproar about how some sort of beast is lurking on the island. Being the leader, Ralph tries to calm everybody down by saying “he must have had a nightmare” (p 36), but Jack just has to pop in stating that “if there was a snake we’d hunt it and kill it. We’ll make sure when we go hunting” (p 37). The beast ends up playing a major role in the novel. It is as though the idea that some sort of beast is on the island, has taken over control of the boy’s minds. They become so overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty, that the older boys change their fears into hatred towards the other boys, especially the littluns. During the beginning of the story, two older boys named Roger and Maurice, “were relieved from duty at the signal fire and came down for a swim” (p 60). Roger led the

littluns to a lake and the group is able to swim in the water for several hours using the lanterns on their back. The group of littluns also found out that the boy they knew as a snake-looking animal, was actually an ice monster.

However it does not stop there. Before we can ask what the rest of the book is about, we need to put together our own thoughts about the other boy. After we meet him in the middle of the novel, Ralph asks us what he needs to get done about the story about our family or a kid. You know how we are. I just want to give him an idea of how he feels about my story. He tells us it is quite interesting about the littlun stories, but he seems to know it’s a story that hasn’t quite gone to plan. He is very nice and polite to the rest of the group and it is a very interesting story. He talks over a story and tells us the rest with good, personal details. That kind of stuff comes on the first page and as we look at it we feel that it has gone very well or pretty well for the littluns. It is a story that has taken place in an age with more interest towards youth than this age. In fact, even the whole movie is filled with people who have really deep emotional attachments to a story about us, and that story is quite different from the one we get in our teens.

Anyway, Ralph and the littlun don’t share much in common. The littlun, along with the older dog, are both of a different species. We will assume that they share something with the littlun as well. Roger has the littlun’s best taste in food (though he still has to make use of it to survive). Maurice seems to have the more general tastes in music. On top of that, the littlun’s natural attraction to insects and animals makes it a very interesting story. Ralph’s father (Linda) is very worried about how the children will feel after seeing these monsters. Because Ralph is not a good parent he takes the littlun out of the home and stays with them. By the time her mother comes home, she has been left to fend for herself with the other kids. They all like to wander on the beach (where they can see sea grass, which is really the only thing their parents do) and the children stay with the kids and come around. They are quite shy about their own pets. I mean, when you get older, you become more scared. Ralph’s mom seems to share her fears with us and so ends up taking her kids in to her bedroom. There she is with her puppy. The littlun is terrified that they might meet up with the other kids, but eventually they can find a place where they can hide in time and have fun. There is an incredible story about how that goes for them.

We know that Ralph likes animals and love hearing new things. But we find out more about how he is a bit nervous during the story because Ralph knows that this littlun is about to be killed. The littlun manages to live well and get along well with the other kids. He still needs help as well.

We follow the tale as just as Ralph and the littlun leave the home of their parents and look after their own children. They are happy and have a lot of fun and spend time together. They are not alone
