I chose to do this research paper on the book Slam! by Walter Dean Myers. This book is about a character named Greg Harris who dominates the basketball court, but outside the gym he runs into a series of problems. First his mom transfers him to a different school to get a better education and he feels out of place being from the inner city. At the school Slam runs into problems with his basketball coach and his teachers. His coach won’t play him because he thinks that Slam showboats too much, and Slam’s thinks that his teachers are being unfair with him, which is the cause for his bad grades. Then Slam finds out that his best friend Ice might be dealing drugs, and his life unfolds in front of his eyes, which makes this book an exciting thriller, that you cant put down.

Walter Dean Myers was born on August 12, 1973 in Martinsburg, West Virginia. (Novak)He lost his mother was only three years old. But when he found out that his parents wouldn’t be able to pay for his college tuition, he dropped out of high school and joined the Army. Greg Harris, also know as Slam, dominated the basketball court, but outside the gym he had many problems with his grades, friends and family. The main conflict throughout the story was between Slam’s school work and the basketball team. In the story, Slam’s mom was on his case about bringing his grades up and getting a tutor, and on the court he had problems with his coach about his playing time, and his role on the team(Myers).
