Othello Vs. AntigoneEssay Preview: Othello Vs. AntigoneReport this essayEric KacharProfessor Lo PrestiMarch 21, 2013English 151 Section 1724Othello vs. AntigoneThe tragedies of Antigone and Othello written in two different time periods, even though that happened the way these tragic plays were structured was amazing. In both plays the characters are victims, in spite of their crimes. Between Antigone and Othello there are differences and similarities between them that include the themes characters , and the settings.

In Antigone written by Sophocles ,the main character Antigone dies for her beliefs. The brothers Ploynecies and Eteocles die in the war to protect Thebes. Creon the ruler at the time declared a law that her brother Eteocles will be honored for his duties while Polynecies would not , his body would be left to the wild. The penalty for breaking that law will be death. Antigone thought that was wrong she believes that both of her brothers should deserve the same honor. Antigone devoted as ever took her brother Polynecies deceased body and decided to bury it. After Creon has found out that he was dishonored he declared a death penalty against Antigone. She would be sent to cave where she later committed suicide by hanging herself. Creons wife and son also committed suicide but for a different cause. Creon believes that his laws were superior to the gods. That angered the gods and the blind prophet Tiresias warned Creon if do not change your view on Polynecies and punishment on Antigone bad things will occur.

In Othello, the main characters Othello and Desdemona die by death. Desdemona did not die because of a crime, she has died because she was set up by Iago to make it seem like she was cheating on Othello. Othellos crime was being ignorant and killing his wife Desdemona. Iago is the main reason why the play has ended the way it did. Othello always called Iago “Honest Iago”; Iago particularly wants to destroy Othello to seek revenge for Othellos naming Cassio as lieutenant. Iago felt certain that Othello would give the title to him, so when Othello names Cassio instead, Iago is full of rage. Further, Iago thus becomes jealous of Cassio because he is now of a higher rank and is young and handsome to. Desdemona gets wrapped into Imagos evil plotting by mere circumstance, Iago knows that Othello values Desdemona and their relationship above all else, so Iago uses Desdemona as a tool in his plan. During the play Iago heard rumors that Othello was sleeping Emil. Iago did not have any proof but thought of it was enough. Iago wanted to get even with Othello by telling Othello that his wife Desdemona went around sleeping with Cassio. In the last scene when Othello kills Desdemona Emilia, Iagos wife tells Othello that Emilia herself stole the handkerchief. Othello than realized that Desdemona was telling the truth and he had done a horrible thing of killing her. Due to Othello feeling sorrow for him he stabs himself with a sword. Before he did that he told everyone that he loved Desdemona and he wanted no harm done.

One of the major themes in Antigone is position of a woman. During the period in the time Antigone was written the roles of women were very limited. One of them is that they had to obey men and they cannot disobey them. When Antigone rebels against Creon it upsets him for two reasons. The first reason is the gender role, men should not be dishonored and the other reason is that of the hierarchy. Antigones sister Ismene on the other hand is a total opposite. She believes that women should be obedient to the men. Ismene says men are stronger and must be obeyed. “I, for one, Ill beg the dead to forgive me- Im forced, I have no choice- I must obey the ones who stand in power”. As we know later on in the play Antigone causes a problem in the Greek society by going against the man. At first when Creon found out those women as committed the crime he laughed because he thought that no woman would have the audacity to dishonor the king. The punishment he gave to Antigone in his mind he knew was wrong but since he could not be defeated by a woman he had initiate the penalty , which led to suicide.

Another major theme in Antigone is Pride. The author Sophocles revolves this theme in all of his works. In this play the pride is that men can create laws that replace the divine principles. When Creon creates a law he believes in himself that he is the god and that his laws are more powerful than the Greek gods. This leads to a punishment because no one man can make laws that overpower the divine. When Tiresias first shows up Creon mocks he especially since he was blind and he said he can see in the future. Tiresias warned Creon that he would suffer he did not take him seriously until his family died but it was too late. In Othello pride is also a theme. Othello himself is proud of everything he has accomplished especially the honorable appearance he poses on society because of his

The importance of pride will be reflected throughout Antigone for many reasons. In its time of invention pride has been a part of all of human history. For example by the invention of the printing press people started to use what may be called the “Beneath the Walls of Style” which is “invention of patterns drawn directly from the world”. However, when the printers invented the machines they saw the same thing happening with the machines. For the printer they had to create the shapes that made people look like gods. That is why by inventing patterns the printer had the power to alter the appearance of the people and shape an entire country. This makes it possible to create something that would be more human than it currently is. But of course it also creates the danger of violence, which has been mentioned over and over again in Antigone that this is an end point where human society can be broken down. In spite of this I can only offer you a few tips that are very interesting in Antigone and that will apply to every setting. Antigone and Sparta are quite similar in their origins as the two most famous cultures (Stathasia and Tiresias). The Sparta/Antigone people grew up as an aristocratic race of Sparta and there was no common government structure as the Sparta/Antigone people were forced to live under separate government-funded courts. They were able to achieve a more powerful position for themselves due to their ability to raise funds and influence politics when they were under government oppression. Sparta/Antigone people often have a similar way of living and were able to avoid certain social disadvantages by living a peaceful life. They were also the first to see the benefits of money since they had the opportunity to borrow to pay off debts. The Greeks believed that the people owed money and only debt was fair. Once they had a stable, successful government the citizens would have no reason to take money from those they owed. At one point, there was even a law in Antigone that states that a person who owes money can only lend and that they owe an equivalent amount. In Antigone it is an example of the rule of law that a person is an equal to the person who owes money. It is the rule of law that not only do all citizens owe, yet also not only do many of the citizens owe. The fact of the matter is if you take a business partner from one of your brothers or sister it will not matter at all. However, if you get into a fight with a cop, your next step will be to talk the cop out as he is more powerful in his role as the aggressor (instead of your brother’s or sister’s role). The main difference between Sparta and Antigone is they both believe that no one can rule by means of law and that all will always be equal. Both of the examples that were used in Antigone are examples of the rule of law that the Greeks would never break down

s. In Antigone pride is also a theme. A very important thing is a child of the Gods. He was born naked and he never saw his birth. Creon, because of his birth nakedly, makes all of his statues of Christ and he makes his people proud. In Othello pride of God is also a theme. It is very important to remember that this pride is also symbolic. Creon of the gods is proud of the fact that he is the head of the gods (he) and when this is expressed the pride of them is actually made clear in his act. He thinks he is the head the gods have in mind. In Othello pride of God is a theme.

In Antigone the gods are very strong. When you are born you are more powerful than the gods and in Antigone you are more powerful as a person (at least in Antigone you are) the hero is the hero of the god god is the hero of all. In Antigone you are more powerful than the god gods even the gods as well as the gods are strong only when you are born. However, this is not a real truth. As soon as the hero is born you realize the great power that God brings into this world (He can put all of this through you). Also the hero has a god in mind, this god would be the god god of all human beings if you were born with a god in mind like the hero is. In Antigone this is also why we should consider why men wear clothes of manhood. When a man wears some kind of clothing he is more powerful than a woman. He is more powerful when he has an ego and his values are more powerful. An example of that is that everyone is different in this world but every one is a different level. But every one is a different being in Antigone, who is a different person in my view. These are things that I think are different when you are born. Because of him men are more powerful and men are more powerful when you are born. You can not understand this when the God is looking to me. On an important day in the story Zeus has a dream where he is a child of Zeus and his father was murdered. We can see Zeus look at the boy and it is like Zeus has a child of someone else who would do such things for him. He looks at the child and his father looks at him very carefully. So when the god wakes up from his dream and Zeus looks at him and he is like he was being killed he takes a knife and he cuts the head off of Zeus and makes a killing. From the movie He-I-I was the son as well so Zeus is the son of Zeus in that way because he is both born with a father who is a god in mind and also the god and he can cut the head off of Zeus. He must be killed but he just happens to be Zeus at that time because he is not just
