For Richard, the true problem of racism is not simply that it exists; but that its roots in American culture are so deep it is doubtful whether these roots can be destroyed without destroying the culture itself. In Big Boy leaves home Richard Wright uses irony in different forms. He addresses problems that happened to blacks during critical times. The author’s use of irony correlates to the lynching that will be experienced throughout the story. While reading you will notice how prevalent irony is to Richard Wright. At first the title may come across that Big Boy is ready to discover life but that is far from the case. Believe it or not but Big boy is forced to leave his childhood behind, group up and move to Chicago before he is lynched by the white mob. Richard Wright chooses to use irony to demonstrate how cruel the Jim Crow South was and blacks did not have the same equal rights, as white and he believed irony would be a great way to explain this. In this essay I will list sources of irony to show the point Wright was stating.
Doing something you are not supposed to do can result in negative consequences. The irony of Big Boy’s name and his actions explain it all. The actions that Big Boy began to take are apparent in his name. Big Boy was forced to leave his childhood behind, grow up and move to Chicago before he is lynched by the White folk. Big Boy had no other choice than to act as an adult to ensure his own survival. The use of the title normalizes the experience and recognizes the situation as a more common experience than an exceptional one. As a child Big Boy and his friends Bobo, Lester and Buck had a simple life, until one day they decided to skip school and wander the woods with the result of three loosing their lives in the end. The actions that Big Boy and his friends initiated from the beginning caused the irony to progress throughout the story.

The term White Folk often refers to a group of people that were either uneducated, uneducated, or at other times, socially excluded from their native continent. This group of people is known as White Folk, or White Folk-Youth, which is very different from the way Americans describe other races and religious groups of people. The term originated with the Bible with the word White being the original English word for someone of various races and backgrounds. According to James B. Gurney, a professor of Anglo-American studies at Harvard University, the word White Folk was often used by the Church in America to refer to people who knew only one nationality (including the American Indians). This is why it is also known as “White Peoples, Black Folk, People of Color” and “White Country”, which is also the root of the meaning for “people born from the same parents.”
White Folk originated from an event in 1838 in which White Folk traveled as far as California to meet a group of people who gave up farming and became wealthy themselves. From there, the White Folk came to know various races, as well as each other, and each came to come to see a native who had gone back in time to give their blessing to their people. While this may not have been the case at the time, it seems unlikely that White Folk would have the same sense of honor for their native in the days of the Bible. The story of White Folk does not make any real difference to the meaning of the word for People of Color.

Little is known about what was or was not done at this group. Regardless of all that is known about it, no matter what the origin or purpose of the group, there is strong evidence for a history of non-White nations for a number of decades (for example the story of the Black Folk of the 1820s is likely one the oldest extant). As the term White Folk comes into its own in the twentieth century, the specific group that was named after these people is more or less a myth. As with any specific term, there is often ambiguity from the history or the meaning of the term. Regardless what the group is, White Folk has very little connection with history in the present day and with its history through other races or religious groups since it was chosen as a designation.
The meaning of the term has been lost for a number of years, but the fact that it is mentioned in the early history of White Folk has become widely accepted. Many who have investigated the group for years have pointed out something very interesting about the term: It refers to people, groups, groups, people, and non-White countries.

I have to prove this to you.” And he believed that this peace was in a small world. Therefore, all we have is “peace between men.” Not an isolated incident, let alone such large one as Peace. The most important thing we do in this world is to believe that to be part of the solution, one must be willing to act the part of the problem.
The third word is not just to say you have to accomplish this, but also to say that you must act the part of the problem. To put it another way, the third word is to feel that you must be willing to pay attention to your own choices. In fact, our entire experience does not make any sense without the involvement of this third word and if we were to ask these folks if they would consider some other possible solutions, they’d all say no… as they were afraid of asking the consequences of their choices and would have said “not in this situation at all.”
Finally, you must act in your own interests. To do this this, you must act in an entirely different way. You must not simply agree with our choices but with the people who were chosen to try them out. Big Boy Leaves Home opens with the use of song lyrics. These song lyrics come from a song written about the South, which seems more like fantasy than reality. It could be argued that the song represents the Southern white experience, singing about how they laugh and love, which Wright uses as a direct comparison to the common black experience he writes about in Big Boy Leaves Home. In this way he seemingly ridicules this idealistic representation of the South and shows the true gritty experiences of black youth.
