However, there has been a drastic change in our society. In fact, the number of people that are attending college and graduating has increased over the past decades. To be able to compete with todays competitive adults in our society, I made the decision to enroll in college. By enrolling in college my life will be open to many more opportunities in my personal and professional life.
To begin with, I enrolled in college because I wanted to be more successful in my military career. A Marine with college credits has greater potential for promotions. If I am able to get promoted every time that I am in my promotion zone, this means I will be a better provider for my family because my income will increase. Meaning, not only will I be able to afford better things, but I would also be able to put more money away in savings. In addition, promotions mean that I will have more opportunities in my career. I will be able to choose where I want to be stationed at and have a wider selection of special duty assignments. Meaning, if I have an education, my career will be a lot easier because the Marine Corps will have a lot more to offer me. At the same time that I am enjoying my job, I will also be building up for retirement. The longer I stay in and the higher my rank is, the more money I will be able to collect.

However, if you do qualify for the promotion to the Navy, Army, and Marine Corps, it gets pretty hard to find a candidate outside of the Navy. That is, even for those that have completed every one of the Marine Corps, there is still the fear that you may get sent overseas. So instead, recruit at a high school that gives you a place to live, and you will be living there for a long time. Your place is a place that will pay your retirement benefits, and your pension will be much higher, because you can stay in the Navy.

Moreover, attending college will help me gain knowledge on my current major and it will give me an overall better understanding of the firefighter community. “Theres a saying that says, “With great power comes great responsibility.” There is another that says, “Knowledge is power” (Robertson, 2002). The more you know about your job, the better you are going to be at it. If my subordinates see that I am knowledgeable, I will be setting a good example to them. Not only will I be setting a good example to the young Marines, but I will also be a better role model to my children.
Challenges will arise in this journey, however, the qualities that I posses as a Marine will make me successful in this endeavor. Over the last several years, the Marine Corps have instilled in me discipline. They have taught me how to manage my time wisely; which I will be putting to the test when managing both my career and my personal life. By staying motivated, and keeping my priorities straight, I have no doubt in my mind that I will be successful in accomplishing my goal of a higher education and ultimately obtaining a college degree.
