Watching Beloveds movie version and reading its text are two different ways of experiencing a novel. The movie starring Oprah has many scenes taken away from the original text, in order to alleviate the disturbing and emotional bothersome of the novel. One of the scene left out is the scene when Sethe pays to have Beloveds name craved on the tombstone. She chose to pay by sleeping with the engraver in front of his son. This scene is right at the beginning of the novel therefore if it was put into the movie, it would have been a gross start. Thus, reading text version gives us the most practical look at the story, whereas making movie requires choosing and considering the most worth scenes. Another scene of the movie which is quite different from the text is the dehydrated voice of Beloved. It was quite disturbing and was done pretty well in the movie. Additionally, the novel has parts that are not as drastic as they do in the movie. For example, we can see how powerful the spirit was by watching how it threw things around the house. One of the scene unparticular is the scene when Sethe, Denver and Paul D came back from the carnival and saw Beloved standing against the tree. Another scene was when slaves were lining up to be hung up and some slaves have bit in their mouths. These scenes were described quite clearly in the text but the movie really brought them into life. Although havent finished the film, I prefer the novel to the film because of its clarity, completeness and realistic experience. Reading the book is the most effective way to understand the authors purpose and themes of writing the book. Watching movie although is more exciting , the director cant transfer everything from the book to the movie, thus causing vagueness and misunderstanding to the
