Tennis
“I think about that sometimes Ð- learning to play in a parking lot, stringing nets between cars. I learned to play by hitting against a brick wall, not a ball machine or other players. And my father was my coach Ð- teaching me from a 20 year old book. When I hear people say that you cant make it in tennis if you dont have a lot of money, I know they are wrong. We didnt have much money. But I loved the sport and that was enough” Monica Seles is a great example of someone who didnt have a lot of all the advantages of having money and still becoming a professional tennis player and winning 53 championships in her 13 year carer. I am going to imform you in this speech on the topics of how to play tennis, the history of tennis, and the grand slams of tennis.

First off in tennis there are three main types of strokes the ground stroke, the volley, and the serve. You start every point with the serve so it only makes since to start by explaing the serve. To serve the ball toss it about a racket length above your head and hit it onto your opponents side of the court. Next we have ground strokes there are two different types of ground strokes there is the fore hand and the back hand. You would use a ground stroke to return a ball when you are near the back line. And finally we have volleys there are three types of vollyes a fore hand volley, a back hand volley and the overhead. Volleys are used when you are up at the net. Now I wil teach you how to keep score in tennis. First of all you score a point when the ball bounces twice on your opponents side of the court. The score goes Love, 15, 30, 40. If the score gets to 40 40 it becomes duece. In duece if you win a point it becomes your ad. If you win the next point when it is your ad then you win the game. Now that you know how to play tennis you can learn the history of tennis.

The ball game that was to become tennis was first played by Cristian Monks. This early version of tennis as we know it today was called “La Soule”. “La Soule” was played by players hitting a ball back and forth using their hands or a stick. The first tennis racket was created in the 13 century. The original tennis ball also needed some improvement since it was just a ball of solid wood. A new softer tennis ball was created out of leather stuffed with bran. The game as we know it today came to be in France in the 16th century it was called “Jeu De Paumme”meaning the game of the palm. French players would start the match by shouting “tenez” meaning play in French which is how tennis got its name. In 1877 the first tennis tournament was organized. It consisted of 22 players and had an audience of 200 spectators. Thus the Wimbledon the largest tennis tournament in the world was born. Now we can go into greater detail of all four of the major world tournaments.

There are four major tournaments in tennis the Austrailian open, the U.S. open, the French open, and Wimbledon.
