See attached photocopyMangosteensThe authors purpose is to remind readers that even though we live in a world of convenience, some things are better left waiting for and worth the enjoyment they bring in that moment. I got this impression from the reading because the author describes Mangosteens as an “unattainable commodity”- even though they are available in Canada, they do not have the same taste or effect as they do when enjoying them in Southeast Asia.
The main idea is implicit. Globalization has become so wide spread that we are able to get anything anywhere. Despite this, some things should be left where they originate. Mangosteens are treasures that are unique to Southeast Asia. Even though we can have them imported and available in other parts of the world, it doesnt have the same experience as buying them for a street vendor in Malaysia.
The tone of the essay builds anticipation. It starts off laid back, kind of informative, and then moves into excited and then finishes off enlightened. The tone keeps the reader engaged, curious to keep reading so that I can find out what the purpose of the essay is. It is easy to ready with lots of descriptions and ideas that the reader can relate to. For example when the author says “But through it all, I yearned for just one exquisite taste on my tongue. I couldnt wait to get to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysias sleek capital and the last stop on my tour, where mangosteens awaited me like a long-lost love.” Another example is “The mangosteen is not some over-engineered supermarket banana. Its not a Tropicana Twister ingredient or a Jelly Belly flavor. Its a temperamental mistress and a genuine delicacy; a thing available only in its place of origin and too distinctive to be simulated.”
