Neighbors
By: Raymond Carver
The story neighbors takes place in a apartment complex. Bill and Arlene Miller are a couple that are left to take care of the Stones apartment. The Stones leave for a trip and the Millers go to their apartment and do what the Millers would do. It seems like if there is a close friendship between them. The Millers seem to find their lives less exciting than the Stones. Bill would go to the Stones apartment to water the plants and feed the cat.

As the story goes on Bill becomes more and more interested in the Stones belongings. He was almost living through them he would eat some of their food, drink their drinks, and even try on their clothes. “He reached in the back (of the liquor cabinet) for the bottle of Chivas Regal. He took two drinks from the bottle, wiped his lips on his sleeve, and replaced the bottle in the cabinet”(70) If Bill were to enter the apartment with the door open or with someone else or of course if the Stones were actually present, Im sure he would not just help himself to a drink. Bill even increases his desire to have sex in the Stones apartment. Arlene spends a long time in the Stones apartment as well going through their personal things.

At the end the couple forget the key inside the apartment, they are locked out. In that moment the couple realize how they are behaving. Overall, this story is about how people compare their lives to others. That is a common thing in marriages. Even though at the beginning Bill and Arlene didnt seem to be unhappy with their lives it resulted that they were.
