Scarves become an important part of our wardrobes as the weather gets colder,
and it wasnt always used just to keep warm.Although the scarves main puropose in current days is to help fight the cold, the scarve has clearly become more of a fashion statment than a neccesity. The scarve has actually evolved from being used for completelty other reasons in the past before it became a fabulous accesory to add to our outfits.

The scarve has roots from Ancient Rome, where it was used more as a cloth to keep clean. They called it a sudarium which means sweat cloth. The men of Rome would usually carry them around their necks or as a belt while they worked in hot weather. In Ancient China and in the sevententh century of Croatia both used scarves for a similar purpose, which was as a symbol of their ranking. In Ancient China around approximately 230 B.C. the Chinese Emperor Cheng had his warriors wear the cloth as a symbol of their rank. In the seventh century of Croatia scarves represented the military ranking of the soliders. The lower ranking soilder were to wear scarves of cotton, and officers were to wear scarves made of expensive silk. In the eightenth century of France scarves were refered to as “cravats”, which comes from the Croation world “kravata”. The cravats were used as a symbol of a persons political party.

In the 1800s was truly when fashion scarves became popular. They were usually made from silk and beautiful patterns, which were really expensive. As the consumer demand rised they began to produce scarves of cheaper fabris like rayon.Scarves were made to match the situation of the current events of that time. Scarves produced during World War II were usually more conservative, while scarves of the sixties were really vibrant and bright in colored and had many floweral patterns.

Scarves have an interesting history and is an accessory that each person could find to fit their own personal taste. The scarve has been used for warmth, removal of sweat, and as even as a symbol. The cloths we wear around our necks today have served as many more purposes than just a fashion statment.
