In my opinion Amir does love Hassan although it is usually difficult for him to show it.
He once considers Hassan a servant rather than a friend but quickly corrects his thoughts. In the
kite flying competition when Hassan ventures out to go find the kite and is caught in an alleyway
by Assef and the boys he hangs around and have Hassan cornered and Amir simply watches as
Assef rapes Hassan. Amir cannot do anything about the rape due to Hassans inferior status as a
Hazara. According to the biblical definition love ALWAYSE protects but in this case Amir did
not protect Hassan. Threw the entire novel Amir constantly strives to please his father Baba. He
constantly strives for Babas approval. Amir allows Hassan to get raped because he envies
that when Hassan brings back the kite it would win him Babas love. According to the biblical
definition of love ,It does not envy so here Amir contradicts his love for Hassan once again.
In Babas eyes there is only one sin and that is theft. Amir frames Hassan by putting his birthday
money and a watch Baba gave him under Hassans pillow. When Hassan is asked if he stole it he
sais he did although it is not true. Throughout the entire story Amir treats Hassan horribly and
Hassan always repays him in a loving way.Amir recalls an event that happened twenty-six years before, when he was still a boy in Afghanistan, and says that that made him who he is. Before the event, he lives in a nice home in Kabul, Afghanistan, with Baba, his father. They have two servants, Ali and his son, Hassan, who are Hazaras, an ethnic minority. Babas close friend, Rahim Khan, is also around often. When Afghanistans king is overthrown, things begin to change. One day, Amir and Hassan are playing when they run into three boys, Assef, Wali, and Kamal. Assef threatens to beat up Amir for hanging around with a Hazara, but Hassan uses his slingshot to stop Assef.
