America’s longstanding cautiousness to become involved in European alliances and wars, referred to isolationism, a policy of non-involvement in world affairs. The US stood outside of world affairs, and instead watched the effects of them to other countries and how it would effect them positively of negatively. Throughout history, the Spaniards abused and oppressed smaller countries that could not defend themselves, giving that Spain was only a fraction of what it is today, it was still bigger and stronger than countries such as Cuba, Guam, the Philippines and Puerto Rico. These small countries have tried to gain independence but failed against Spain, being too small for war. America was and still is today looked upon as a country of freedom, unlike any other country, and having no involvement in any world affairs was one of the many attributes that made the United States so unique. Yet, America wanted to have economic relations with the smaller countries because there were Americans that wants foreign materials and foods, which changed its perspective on world affairs, the Newspapers made the people want to go to war with Spain to protect the helpless Cubans, but in all reality the American government wanted to protect he growing interests in Cuba. Giving that Cuba was only about ninety miles from the shores of Florida, making it impossible to want to give all the resources to Spain, America was being greedy with sharing resources. Businesses in the US agreed with the war, for they could open new markets and receive more profit than theyre already getting. During the Spanish-American War, America helped Cuba to gain independence from the Spaniards, after, Cuba allowed the United States to set up a naval base, involved in maintaining their government, and as well as their independence.This arrangement affected the United States greatly, for they had new responsibilities considering the added possessions, the navy increased in size, began to become involved
