The American Pit Bull Terrier CaseEssay Preview: The American Pit Bull Terrier CaseReport this essayThe American Pit Bull Terrier is the product of interbreeding between terriers and bulldogs to produce a dog that combined the gameness of the terrier with the strength and athleticism of the bulldog.[4] These dogs were initially bred in England and arrived in the United States with the founders. In the United States, these dogs were used as catch dogs for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt, to drive livestock, and as family companions.[4] Some have been selectively bred for their fighting prowess.[5][6] The United Kennel Club (UKC) was the first registry to recognize the American Pit Bull Terrier.[7] UKC founder C. Z. Bennett assigned UKC registration number 1 to his own dog, “Bennetts Ring”, as an American Pit Bull Terrier in 1898.[4]

American Pit Bull Terriers successfully fill the role of companion dog, police dog[8][9] and therapy dog.[10] Terriers in general have a higher tendency towards dog aggression[11] and American Pit Bull Terriers constitute the majority of dogs used for illegal dog fighting in the United States.[12] In addition, law enforcement organizations report these dogs are used for other nefarious purposes, such as guarding illegal narcotics operations,[13][14] use against the police,[15] and as attack dogs.[16]

The fighting reputation of pit bull-type dogs led the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in 1996 to relabel pit bull terriers as “St. Francis Terriers” (not associated with the “terrier” mascot of St. Francis College in New York) so that they might be more readily adopted;[17] 60 temperament-screened dogs were adopted until the program was halted after several of the newly adopted dogs killed cats.[18] The New York City Center for Animal Care and Control tried a similar approach in 2004 by relabeling their pit bull terriers as “New Yorkies”, but dropped the idea in the face of overwhelming public opposition.[

The American Staffordshire Terrier was the product of 19th century interbreeding between bulldogs and terriers that produced the “bull-and-terrier dog,” “Half and Half,” and at times “pit dog” or “pit bullterrier,” the last named becoming the “Staffordshire Bull Terrier” in England. The bulldog of that time differed from the modern Bulldog, having a full muzzle and a long, tapering tail. There is some debate whether the White English Terrier, the Black and Tan Terrier, the Fox Terrier or some combination thereof were used. These dogs began to find their way into America as early as 1870 where they became known as Pit Dog, Pit Bull Terrier, later American Bull Terrier, and still later as a Yankee terrier.[21] They were imported primarily, but not exclusively, for pit fighting.[22]

In 1936, they were accepted by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as “Staffordshire Terriers.”[21] Breeders started creating exemplars heavier in weight. Since January 1, 1972, it was renamed to “American Staffordshire Terrier” to make a separate breed from the lighter Staffordshire Bull Terrier of England.[21]

Famous Pit Bulls üüPit Bull breeds have become famous for their roles as soldiers, police dogs, search and rescue dogs, actors, television personalities, seeing eye dogs and celebrity pets. Historically, Sergeant Stubby the war hero who served for the 102nd infantry of World War I and Petey from the Little Rascals, are the most well known. Lesser known, but still historically notable pit bulls include Helen Kellers family dog “Sir Thomas”,[23] Buster Browns dog “Tige”,[24] Horatio Jacksons dog “Bud”,[25][26] President Theodore Roosevelts Pit Bull terrier “Pete”, “Jack Brutus” who served for Company K, the First Connecticut Volunteer Infantry during the civil war[27] and Sir Walter Scotts

Pit bull-infested places are notorious for the deaths of other dogs due to abuse and neglect. A very poor and abandoned American pit bull named, Billy, died when he was 5 years old at Bancroft Park Hospital in Atlanta Georgia. Billy lost it. When he finally moved to New York City, he was taken to his abandoned home, his pit bull in full spaniel-style. His owners brought him back to the pit bull house, but this is only his first visit. The house is in disrepair; his dog, which was already a pit bull, has been replaced by a different breed of dog. The pit bull in Billy’s first visit was “Joker”, a pit bull terrier that was purchased and used for training. At the center of this show is a 5-year-old pit bull terrier named “Lil Dick” who was a pit bull in his first visit. (Also shown, with the dogs from the show on top of each other, is a different breed of pit bull in a different dog’s pit bull coat)

The pit bulls, of the Chicago Bulls series have been killed under similar circumstances. They were both pit bull dogs to Billy in the Chicago Fire Fighting Association matches, but there were other pit bulls involved. He died from wounds sustained when he came to safety.

A recent piece of history may shed some light on this pit bull incident:

Billy was the 11th most visited by a pit bull in Chicago during the first month of May, according to the Chicago Tribune. The incident happened just outside of New York City, where a pit bull was being raised for Billy.

The Chicago Tribune revealed an incident of “the most visited pit bull in a month” that resulted in Billy’s death. “In the past month, there were at least five such incidents that involved pit bulls, including the fatal attack on Billy in the Firehouse Garden in April when he was 11. But all have been fatal and no more so than before, when he was 13, he was in a pit bulls house. It looked like a new home, where it could not have survived the previous two months,’ said Chicago Fire spokesman Tom Nelles,” said the latest story. It wasn’t until last fall’s incident in which Billy was 12, that his pit bulls were killed — but on June 14, 2005 Billy was killed with one of four pit bulls killed in a fight that involved two people.
