The American Dream at this time in America was troubling. Many women were not able to do as they pleased. They were still in control by their husbands. Most couples during this time seemed very sad and upset. When the epitaphs of husbands and wives were written most of them were lies. Richard Bone said in his epitaph that “ I chiseled for them whatever they wished, All in ignorance of its truth.” He said that most people who came to him were lying. So married couples would lie about each other. They often blamed one another for the problems that they caused. Most husbands thought of their wives as property. The American dream of the people at this was that they all wanted to be free. Most women wanted to be who they could be, not what their husbands tried to form them to be. For example, Ollie McGee said “ The face of what I was, the face of what he made me!” Those types of women blame their husbands for what they have become and in their American Dream they never wanted that to happen. The dream of the men on the other hand was different. The men were willing to do whatever it took to be happy. Their dream was to become something big. They wanted to become very successful people. Everyone in this time period wanted to have their own dream of America but almost all of them wanted to have peace and be themselves. I think the most of them would not have gotten married if they knew it would change their outlook on their American Dream.
