Cashew Experiment
Objective
The aim of this experiment is to boil 28ml of water with a cashew.
Materials
28ml of water
1 cashew
beaker
hot plate
thermometer
aluminum foil
electronic scale
Procedures
We first poured the 28 ml of water and placed a thermometer in a beaker wrapped with aluminum foil and measured the initial temperature of the water. We then measured the weight of the cashew and burnt the cashew with burner and placed it in a dish wrapped with aluminum foil. We placed the dish under the beaker to try to boil the water.

We wrapped the beaker with aluminum foil because aluminum foil is a good conductor of heat and it is also effective to reflect heat inside the beaker to warm the water. We placed the cashew in a dish wrapped with aluminum foil because aluminum foil can help to focus the heat from the cashew to the beaker in order to boil the water.

Two trials of experiments were performed. For the first trial, we didn’t wrap the beaker and dish with aluminum foil and we failed to boil the water. We later improved the experiment for the second trial by wrapping them with aluminum foil as it is a good conductor and can reflect heat.

Results
We observed that there were bubbles formed on the surface of the water and we were able to boil the water as the thermometer showed that the temperature rose to over 100°C.
