Teaching Philosopy
Each teacher has his or her own way of instructing and it is also the same with teaching philosophies. Some teachers are more into the Essentialism which is teaching your students in the “traditional” method. Another philosophy method is Perennialism which is similar to essentialism but it’s different because they organize their teaching around books, ideas and concepts. I believe Progressivism is a step in the right direction to because the progressivist teachers organize their schools around the concerns, curiosity and real world experiences that the students deal with. If a student is learning about something that will affect them in their life he or she more in tuned to pay attention because it applies to them (Sadker and Zittleman). Social Reconstructionism encourages schools, teachers and students to focus on their studies and alleviating school inequalities. The last teaching Philosophy is Existentialism which focuses on the students and how much of a priority it is for them to learn. It brings back the purpose of education which is to help students. I think that Existentialism is the way that everyone should teach because “Existentialism asserts that the purpose of education is to help children find meaning and direction in their lives, and it rejects the notion that adults should or could direct meaningful learning for children” (Sadker, Zittleman 199). I like this model because it focuses on the children and the teacher is not just straight lecturing the whole time if you see that it is not working at the beginning of the year?
A teacher should be someone that you can go to and the teacher should be a good role model. All students learn differently and a teacher should be able to make their lesson plans to reach all of the learning styles. Learning styles are defined as “a certain specified pattern of behavior and/or performance, according to which the individual takes in new information and develops new skills, and the process by which the individual retains new information or new skills” (Sarasin 1). By knowing what the different styles of learning there are you are better equipped to teach all of the styles effectively. The kinesthetic learners which are the students who like to do activities that allow you to move around. The Visual learners who like to see you write on the board and can pick it up instantly. Then you have the auditory learners who can learn by just listening to you and they might be the ones who do not take notes in class because they can pick up on it just by hearing you. All of these learning styles are different and because they are different you need to base your lessons in ways that can reach all of the different learning styles.
In 6th Grade Social studies we will study the ancient cultures like: Greece, China, Egypt, India, Rome, Native Americans. Also we will learn about Pangea which is the separating of the tectonic plates. is something you need to have in every classroom
