During the 1900s Willem de Kooning demonstrated a great form of abstract arts. As an artist, he demonstrated a unique style based on the demands of the time period he painted in. Whether it was obsession or a style, he had multiple paintings based on woman and also titled “Woman”. They would differentiate in an aesthetic and symbolic language of form, shape, texture, color and gesture, which can to some extent be interpreted. At the museum of modern art I observed 4 different painting titled “Woman”. All four different from one another, expressed different feelings from their approach.

“Woman V” painted with oil on canvas, contains a great bulging eyes, teeth grinning violently, huge limbs, and mountainous breasts. The woman almost seems physically absurd, but in a way invisible. Because of the many geometrical forms in the painting, it gives the impression of texture. However, in the negative space surrounding the figure, the color noticeably becomes darker, exaggerating the outline of the woman. She is like a spewed monster of fantasy blended with her surrounding, almost like graffitied work.

“Woman” which is a very colorful and bright painting is made of oil on canvas. The pink shapes representing the arms of the women appear uneven and irregular. This may be purposely done to symbolize that such women are unbalanced or misshapen. On the other hand, De Coning may have decided to paint the arms of the woman in this way to represent individuality, as no two bodily features are exactly the same. Very discrete, its really hard to tell its a woman.

“Woman II” painted from oil on canvas is on the most exciting abstract painting I ever seen. Harsh brush strokes and unsightly shapes and figures represent the female in this painting. This may be a symbolism of De Koonings opinion and belief of women. By representing the female as an oversized, disfigured and unattractive form, De Kooning may be exerting a feeling of disgust towards women; as though they are a separate race from him, or inferior to the male species.

“Woman” composed of charcoal on paper is more understandable and smaller than most of the paintings Ive seen from him. There were both vine and compressed. The use of the charcoal emphasize on the outline and the fade of the woman to establish a life in the art. He gives a great impression of female even though it is abstract.

I think De Kooning lifes art achievement speak for themselves by its
demand and recognition in the art world. As the controversy surrounding his works Kooning is extremely imaginative which makes is art hard to be understood. He is

a genius in his own department; he created something original and fresh away form other artists of his time. Having the same multiple paintings sharing the same title are different in many ways
