Policy Paper on Iraq
The United States government should immediately issue an apology to the people of Iraq and the families of the Coalition personnel that have passed as a result of this unjust war. The next president of the United States must make withdraw of all military personnel from Iraq in a timely manner their number one priority. The United States government has invaded another country under false pretenses and can not now claim the morale high ground by insisting it stays there until it has corrected its mistake. This modern day colonization should not be allowed to continue behind the mask of democracy and national security.

The withdraw of the military should coincide with some sort of humanitarian relief that should provide the people of Iraq with infrastructure upon which they can build their own nation. The United States must not interfere with the politics of Iraq during the process of providing humanitarian relief. The United States government needs to realize that its current and past policies toward Iraq have been the primary reasons for the environment in Iraq today.

While the current administration acknowledges that there are no mass weapons of destruction in Iraq they have not yet offered an apology for their unprovoked attack on the country. In fact a majority of the actions taken by the Bush administration imply that the reason for the attack was Iraq’s oil. Security by the conquering forces was only provided to the oil ministry and other oil sight immediately after the invasion, while several other sights were being robbed by lawless mobs. These mobs and other groups would evolve into the militia groups that are currently fighting today. This lack of planning and security is what most people believe to be the cause of the violence that is occurring in Iraq today.

The policies of the United States towards Iraq have caused nothing but pain and hardship for the citizens of the country. Besides the removal of Saddam Hussein a man that the United States assisted in obtaining power the United States has not done anything that has improved the lives of ordinary Iraqi’s. The sanctions passed after the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein were meant to harm the president but achieved nothing but furthering the misery of ordinary Iraqi’s. The sectarian violence in Iraq today is a result of poor governing and planning provided by the United States government. Most Iraqis today would argue that they were in a much better situation under Saddam and that they want the United States to leave right now. The policies of the United States in the Middle East and its bias support of the government of Israel is the cause for the animosity the region has towards the United States.

Prior to the invasion of Iraq by the Unites States there were no terrorist organizations residing in the country. The invasion of Iraq has provided groups such as Al Qaeda with the opportunity to engage the United States in a foreign territory and increase the number of individuals that support its cause. Iraq is currently a hot bed for Al Qaeda and the organization has managed to import foreign recruits and rally up more supporters to fight against the U.S., an opportunity created for them as a result of the U.S invasion of Iraq.

The U.S. military as a result of being in Iraq and Afghanistan has been stretched thin by these two fronts and is not able to be as efficient as it could be if it had focused in on one front. Nobody has any doubt that Afghanistan and Pakistan are the two countries where Al Qaeda and probably its leader Osama Bin Laden reside. The Bush administration used the attacks on September 11th 2001 to go after Al Qaeda and any organization that was affiliated to it. On September 11th 2001 Al Qaeda was operating from bases in Somalia, Sudan, Afghanistan and to a lesser extent a few other countries, but not Iraq. If the U.S was to disengage from Iraq militarily it could use the forces to launch a more efficient campaign against Al Qaeda and insure that an attack on U.S. soil never happens again.

It can be argued that the country that benefitted the most from the invasion of Iraq by U.S. forces is Iran. With its ambition to acquire nuclear arms and its deep seated hatred for the U.S. and Israel, Iran posses more of a threat to the U.S and the region as a whole than Iraq did under the Saddam regime. Many fear that the current unrest in Iraq and a withdraw of U.S. troop can lead to a situation where Iran can influence the new government of Iraq and create an ally for its crusade against the U.S. and Israel. The history of these two nations
