Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 for the separation of the thirteen colonies. In this he wanted a country with a government that allowed every citizen the ability to exercise of his or hers inalienable rights. The rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Websters online dictionary defines life as the physical and mental experiences that make up the existence of an individual. As an American Im able to live me life from day to day the way I choose. I had to start a life on my own without my parents to be there to make decisions for me.

The power to do as one pleases defines liberty. Over many years the goal of liberty has been established in our country. Although, when Jefferson was writing the declaration he was not including slavery. Over time this legacy has granted many African Americans. This is very important to me because I am African American. Liberty grants me the power to do what and not be tied down to someone else. Many African Americas did not have the choice of liberty. With the abolishment of slavery and segregation, Jeffersons goal has been accomplished.

Political liberty is one of example of Jeffersons legacy. In the United States we have the freedom to choose a leader or law that we want. It has taken many years for everyone to have political liberty. For many centuries woman or African Americans were not allowed to vote. With various movements and people using there freedom of speech; they were able to gain the power to vote. After Turing the age 18, and being eligible to vote.
