Symptoms may include but not limited to constipation, diarrhea, or a little of each, bloating, abdominal pain, and many other problems.

Sign of irritable bowel syndrome begins during adolescence or early adulthood. The altered bowel movement starts over a period of days and weeks. Sometime symptoms may be continuous. Both constipation and diarrhea can occur or happen over and over again in a given individual. This disease may vary depending on the individual but it will start a consistent pattern.

Irritable bowel syndrome usually comes on as a part of stress. One could be awakening during the night and normally this is not associated with fever or rectal bleeding. The diarrhea portion of this disease is unusually of small volume, but happens often. The first morning movement may be normal but will change over to a loose bowel movement there out the day.

The pain of this disease can vary in severity form mild to severe. Most of the pain is normally felt on the left side of the abdomen throughout the lower part of the abdomen. The pain can normally be relieved by passing gas or defecation. This pain may be sharp, dull crampy continuous pain until relieved.

Scientist thinks that the serotonin and 5-HT3 receptors are a major role in increasing the sensations of pain and affecting bowel function in irritable bowel syndrome. More so the nerves that control the muscles in the gut may overeat to stimuli like gas and how the food passes though after each meal. As a result of this, it may cause spasms and contractions that can speed up or slow the passage of stool through the colon leading to diarrhea or constipation.
