Stephen King, born in 1947 Portland, is a novelist who writes many horror novels, Man of his well known novels were made into popular movies. In his essay, “Why We Crave Horror movies,” the author explains why humans crave to be frightened. King believes that humans need an healthy outlit to repress our emotions in a harmless manner. Inmate depravity makes humans inherently evil because of adam and eve. Stephen king states that we watch horror movies to relase our inmate depravity which ultimately allows us to satisfy our emotions.

According to Stephen King, we all crave horror movies because we are inheritly evil. He states that modern movies are a relief of violence, and are a fix of adrenaline fun, and also something that can dare the nightmare. Once reason is because we simply want to prove ourselves to the society. “To show that we can, that we are not afraid, that we can ride this roller coaster”(453). When a friend asks you to become theirr roller coaster partner, in most cases you would say yes. Even if it was your first time, you want to prove to your friends that your not a wimp. He also implies that horror movies only appeal to the young. “And horror movies, like roller coaster, have always been the special province of the young”(453). When your old, you no longer live for the thrill or estasy. Other things are important to you when your around your 40s and 50s. According to Stephen King, “the horror film has become a modern version of public lynching.” It always feels great to watch and do something with the crowd. Even though you know that your watching something wrong and inappropriate, the crowd suddenly makes it all appropriate. Most people move with the crowd, not away from the crowd. The height of adrenaline is always increased when your part of something. Sometimes horror movies satisfies the anti-civilized feelings we have. Teenagers always want to rebel and go against their parents. Horror movies allows us to satisfiy our emotions. Stephen King also states that horror movies are innately conservative than realities in life. “We also go to reestablish our feelings of essential normality: the horror movie is innately conservative, even reactionary”(454). The horror movies arent as ugly as the real world we live in. The endings of horror movies always prevails justice, and the good guy always overcomes the bad.
