Topic #1: Considering the budgetary constraints the school system is facing, do you think that every institution should allow advertising? Keep in mind that simple things like a Coke machine count as advertising and do generate money for the school.

I attend Westhill high school, a public school, in Connecticut, one of the wealthiest states in the nation. With that said most would think that my school would have a reasonable educational budget. This is not so. As a matter of fact, my school has done a lot of sacrificing, going to the limits of no longer being able to help the students. Do I think that advertising should be allowed? Of course, as long as it benefits the school and most importantly the students education.

I am currently a senior, and have suffered through the educational budget cuts. All four years I have taken art, and there has always been a deficit in paper and markers or colored pencils. My art teacher, which I have had for three years, would have to buy our supplies from his own pocket. The paper that would be mostly available to us was the grey construction paper which was falling apart. How can there be an art class without these important materials at hand. Although art is considered an elective, it has hit harder in the academics department. I believe it was my sophomore year at Westhill that we went through a paper shortage. Not just for students but for teacher also. In the media center, you would not be able to print out your homework because there was no paper. The teachers were not able to give you handouts because there was no paper. How can the state think that we can learn and excel our knowledge without paper? So why can’t advertising help solve these problems?

Although the point of advertising is to sell a product to teenagers, is it such a great deal? I think that as long as we can benefit from them educationally then it would be a great move. Providing that it would be able to facilitate
