Theatre for Social Change
1. Rooting from an issue I am truly passionate about, I chose the issue of racism in society. As an Asian American, and a minority at this University, I have been a figure involved with racial prejudice during my time as a student. I have been the recipient of bias, solely due to my racial status. What I believe does require attention is the blatant national events that occur because of racism. For example, the Trayvon Martin incident, the Ferguson shootings, or even the racial related arguments at Yale University.2. It is unacceptable that one member of society can instantaneously judge another member, solely on their racial status. It has been years since segregation was outlawed, yet people continue to have bias towards something that people have no control over. This is a social issue that needs to be changed. Presenting a theatre perspective on this social issue will help bring attention and force audiences to contemplate the issue. Creating a society that is aware and supportive of extinguishing racism is ideal. Racism prevents members of society from being viewed as equals; it gives specific individuals a disadvantage.3.For this project, there should be 10 performers. The location should be in a place that supports open-minded thinking and progressive movements. Consequently, I believe it should be held in a University run amphitheater. This way, it will be received in the right manner, with the progressive individuals who will shape the future of our society. It should be a paid performance, solely on the reasoning that the employees need incentive to continue a long run of this show. This is all in hopes to reach a large audience and create word of mouth within the University.

4. The target audiences are students who attend University. College aged students are a receptive audience to social movements, and they lead the way for future change. Younger students are able to absorb the importance of equality during a period of time when they are accustomed to learning.5. The interaction with the audience will be primarily based on asking questions to the attendees and requiring a response. This strategy helps to promote active participation from the audience, and allow people to speak up about their experiences with racism. The more people talking about racism, the better it is for bringing attention to the topic.6. The size of the audience can affect a number of factors. Having a large audience helps to spread the ideas to more people. However, with only 10 actors participating, it is more ideal to have a smaller audience so that the setting feels more intimate. In addition, active participation is well-received in smaller audiences, so people can hear and see who is talking.7. It is important that the play has a very natural/real ambiance around it. So, it is important to have candid lighting so that the audience feels as if they are truly watching through a “fourth wall”.
