Death’s Point
Markus Suzak uses point of view, symbolism, and mood to show that from Death’s perspective that life isn’t fair, and we are all going to die. Death can come to us at anytime when we least expect it. Throughout the story we see and understand that death takes the lives of people; when they least expect it. In the prologue Death compares certain events to colors. The colors he uses reflect on the mood of that event, when Liesel’s brother died on the train Death focuses on the color black. The color black is seen with death when mourning and sadness. The mood changes from Death to just taking souls, to was from Death’s perspective we see that life isn’t fair and we are all going to die.
From Death’s point of view we see how people are so secretive and that they take life for granted. With point of view we see how Liesel seems like an innocent girl, but from Death’s point of view we see that Liesel steals books. Also from Death’s perspective in point of view we see what was going outside of Himmel street during the war. During the war we see that Death takes the souls of people and after a while his “job” gets to him. If Liesel or Rudy was narrator we would only understand the story from a child’s perspective, we would only see the story from himmel street and back home. Not whats going an all around during this time, people were just dying but we wouldn’t see how they died. Death has feelings for the souls he takes and we understand that everybody is going to die at some point.
Throughout the story we see of symbol of darkness, and stealing. Darkness is a color that occurs in the book thief a lot. Liesel learns to read in darkness in the basement down stairs. Max also hides in darkness, we see that darkness symbolizes safety and also an obstacle. Max can only see stars on darkness and he is able to
