In the story A Rose for Emily written by William Faulkner the author writes in a way that allows the reader to understand that minor characters are just as important to a story as the major characters. I felt that character and setting in this story was very important. The authors use of characterization creates vivid images so that the reader can get to know and understand what is happening to the characters. The setting of this story is just as important as the characters as it allows the reader to easily relate and visualize what life was like for Emily in this small town.

In this story Emily would be considered a round character. The author writes the story almost entirely around her. We know a great deal of history about Emily and what motivates her to do some of the things she does. We see this when the author writes of Emilys lineage. The reader needs to be able to understand not only that Emily came from a prestigious family but also that Emily herself felt a deep commitment to upholding this familys good name. An example of a flat character would be the Negro house boy. This character plays an important role in the story but we do know have much history or personal knowledge of him.

I felt Emily was a person who was committed to living her life the way a person of noble heritage was expected to live but was torn by wanting to live her life by following her heart. She gave up on true love because the one she loved was not acceptable by others standards. The house boy also felt a commitment or loyalty to Emily. We easily see this by his staying in her service and being dedicated to her for so many years. The reader never knows exactly why the house boy is so committed but we know he never broke his loyalty to Emily. We see this when the author writes that the Negro man never spoke to anyone outside of the home.

The setting of this story is perfect. The author tells of a grand house that was once a select piece
