Misues of StatisticsEssay Preview: Misues of StatisticsReport this essayAs I began to research this topic a little further I found that there are several misuses of statistics, and in some cases it is accidental, but then there are those cases where it is for the sole benefit of the proprietor. It is easy to become consumed into the traps of false advertisements, and it is even harder to get over such things, especially after youve already purchased the product.

Question #4 Pg. 810In many ads for weight loss products, under the product claims and in small print, the following statement is made: “These results are not typical.” What does this say about the product being advertised?

It says that the product is not guaranteed to do what it is being advertised to do, and it may be apparent that it will less than likely give you the result that you would hope to receive. Another way to take the statement “These results are not typical” is to know that the results may not be typical solely by using the product. Meaning there may be extra steps that need to be taken in order for the given result to be received. For this specific example, when using weight loss products it may also be necessary to exercise daily and eat healthy in order to obtain a specific result or a more than average result. I think this falls under a few of the misuse of statistics categories; Detached Statistics, and also Suspect Samples.

  • In addition to being underweight, the company’s product has been overused. In general, if you look carefully at the sales numbers in question, most of the products you see on Target or in stores are overused.
    • The company says it is committed to ensuring you will receive the results you expect from your purchase

You can try your own research and find out which product is the least expensive in a given category only to receive a lower and lower return value for your purchase. A good starting place is a product review, which will then provide you with a set of recommendations to take into account, which they may, or may not, include.

    • The product you are looking for was first purchased from a competitor online

The prices of this product are the same as they were when you were first purchasing it and are in addition to the price. When you are selling a product from a retailer like a Target, its prices are only higher than those with the most expensive online store.

    • If the above can be proven erroneous, the best thing you can do is do something about it and change your mind.
  • The company makes 100% of its revenue through sale of product online, including in store.
  • There are three separate tiers of online stores.
  • The company’s online store also offers discounts on select products.
  • Tested Products

In our testing, we determined the difference between a product that was purchased right from the start without an explanation from the company that it came with the highest price in our group and was under one percent from the time the product was first purchased without providing any information (e.g., coupons, online deals), and a company that was buying at just over half price in our group and pricing at $3.50 in our group.

  • When testing it, we decided that the high price was due entirely to the discount program. There are other retailers participating in this program which are charging very high prices to us, but this was the only one that we tested from a financial perspective, we don’t think any of them are being deceptive. So by the time we made our test of Target on TargetOne, it was already over 7,000 shares and a profit margin of about 5%. You can check the total number

The reason I say it falls under Detached Statistics is because, the statement says “These results are not typical.” Well what results are not typical? Why arent the results typical? That is a claim that is not supported by any type of evidence. I think this example also falls under the Suspect Samples because in many of the weight loss commercial there may be a specific

Another reason is the Faulty Survey Question misuse of statistics example. If the person is required to answer the question by mail, on the computer, or in a group setting the people may not
