Avarice& Vengeance
Avarice and vengeance is showed throughout a few main characters: Thomas Putman, John Proctor, and Abigail Williams. The characters are faced with some of the seven deadly sins: specifically, greed, lust and wrath. Putnam, Proctor, and Williams were the characters whoare portrayed to reveal avarice and vengeance through the seven deadly sins.
Thomas Putnam was a quite demanding and a greedy man. Putman often wants everything his way.
Now look you, sir. Let you strike out against the devil, and the village will
Bless you for it! Come down, speak to them-pray with them. They are
thirsting for your word, minister! Surely, you will pray with them. (Miller
I.18).
Putman is very demanding in the quote he wants it all to be his way “come down” he wants the characters to confess what they believe. Putman refers to the people as striking against the devil; the characters would do certain activities that would be wrong to Putnam. Putnam reveals greed; first, he talks to the characters in any tone and did not think different of it. Second, he wants only his wants and needs. Finally, Putnam is willing to force another character to do what they may have not be comfortable with to receive his way. In addition, greed reveals avarice because Putnam desired to get his way in any condition.
John Proctor is a straightforward character in most conditions. Proctor is accused of being involved with Williams, but he did not come right out and approve of it. “Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time” (I.24). Proctor tells Abigail about his feeling after the fact the two of them bickered about the affairs. Williams first accuses him because he did not admit but after awhile he tells her how he feels. Proctor also represents lust, but in the beginning, he seems a bit shy to show it. There
