Is high school really just four years of your life spent waiting for college or what lies after? Despite how you may sometimes feel, high school is a very important phase in a young adults life. In my personal experience, high school has taught me: That these four years equip me for my future career, that I dont need to wait until Im older to make a difference, and finally that God knows the plan for my life so I can trust that He will take care of my future.

As a child, my mom always told me that my most important job was to do well in school. The older I got, the more I realized that shes right. In the Bible God tells us to do everything to the best of our ability. That includes our school work, and in the end, its for our own good! The classes that we take in high school prepare us for everyday skills we will need in our adult lives, and they also help us understand what careers we will want to pursue after college. Even though most days we dont feel like getting out of bed to sit in a class room all day, we know that its in our best interest.

Another very important thing that the last four years has taught me, is how my age doesnt prohibit me from doing Gods work. 1 Timothy 4:12 says: “Dont let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and purity.” Dont let anyone look down on you because you are young. As young adults we can set examples in all the same ways that our elders do. We can show our peers and others alike that we are Gods people through speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.

Finally, high school has given me a new level of trust in God. So much happens during high school. Sometimes we just cant make it alone. But God is always there. He knows what will happen today, tomorrow, next week, and the rest of our lives. And he is going to protect us. Jeremiah 29:11 says: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plants to give you hope and a future.” Who better to trust in than God?

If I could impart what Ive learned in high school to the underclassmen, it would be these three things: That our time in school equips us for our careers, that we can make a difference as young adults, and that we can trust God to take care of our futures. High school is a once-in-a-life-time experience that prepares us to be sent out into the future that God has in store for us. That much I know for sure.
