Support groups involving patients with similar disease processes have increased in popularity in recent years. Some examples of such groups are cancer support groups, Alzheimers support groups, and drug and alcohol addiction support groups. Each of these group settings encourages the use of communication as part of the treatment process. “Support groups are made up of people with common interests and experiences. People who have been through, or are going through, a similar circumstance can do more than sympathize with you-they can relate to what you are going through and keep you from feeling like you are alone (Randall, 2010). Support groups offer a wide range of resources such as treatment options and financial assistance.

Practical support group materials are available for anyone who is working in a group setting, or is doing research-you can find guidance on how to meet their goals. Support groups in UK have become much more popular over the years. While not all support groups in the UK are the same, there are some important things to remember about them.

1. There is no official way of saying who can and cannot contribute, who “helps”, or when or where they can or can’t.

2. There is a lot of research going into these. The best information about charities, and the role they play is often based on specific research and studies of what actually works on the patient.

3. It must be noted that support groups are based directly on your feelings and wishes. If you feel a connection to some individuals, or want to support others whose lives do not improve for other reasons, then then maybe you can help others. However, in general, it must be noted that any support group is not an exact science-it is more like an informal group with your friends, family, or any other person you know working in the group. To learn more about the issues they are facing or what they are going through, consult with support group experts.

4. There is no formal, voluntary government-there is no authority on it.

5. Support groups are always open and open to anyone who would like to contact them.

6. The way they function, is also determined by the group-if a group decides to go their separate ways, the same people might make different decisions as long as they are still affiliated with it. In other words, each group’s members are very involved with each other. You should ask for your friends and family to take care of each other’s affairs (or some other way).

Therefore, a physicians communication with a patient should be used in the most effective format possible. Patients know that communication matters, and to most patients effective clinician-patient communication is not an option, it is a necessity. A clinicians role in communication effectively with patients can be broken down into a process that includes the following communication tasks: engagement, empathy, education and enlistment (Mock, 2001).

From a business standpoint, effective communication between the physician and the patient would increase the potential for a patient to return to that same physician if needed. Unfortunately some aspects of health care have turned into a business. Effective communication could be considered as a main component of customer service.
