The movie A Girl with a Pearl Earring is based on the award-winning book with by Tracy Chevaller. Johannes Vermeers most famous painting becomes the focus of the story. The story may be somewhat of a mystery and with the actors performances; its story becomes much more appealing.
Griet, played by Scarlet Johansson, was sent to work as a maid in the home of Johannes Vermeer, played by Colin Firth. Like a typical maid, Griet scours pans and cleans rooms in the house.
Griet caught the interest of Vermeer when he learned that she could understand what painting is. Griet was interested in painting, and she was knowledgeable about it. With Griets interest in painting, she begins to spend more time in Johannes studio where he would teach her how to mix colors.
Griet also caught the eyes of two men, Pieter and Van Rujiven. Problems arose when Van Rujiven suspected that Griet and Vermeers have a relationship. More problems arose which made Griets life more complicated.
Scarlet Johanssons acting was effective. She may have few lines to say but she performed with emotions because of her facial expression. She knows how to act without talking. She had this power in portraying a character who is innocent and naïve.
Colin Firth must also be lauded in playing Johannes Vermeers character. His repressed action was effective in showing his feelings towards Griet. He delivered his lines powerfully, and his acting contributes to his good performance in the movie.
A Girl with a Pearl Earring is considered a good film in many respects. The combination of talents, wonderful cinematography, good script, and well-performed acts make the movie an excellent work of craft. Director Peter Webber must be applauded for bringing into life this melodramatic film.
