Explain why husbands and wives benefit from specialization and exchange. Under what conditions are these benefits likely to be large?
Its very difficult nowadays for a household to be self-sufficient and not need any goods and services from outside sources. Husbands and wives benefit from exchange in order to make their lives easier by concentrating more of their time on their specific service or “specialization.” These benefits are larger in places where soil and water is dry, making it difficult to farm for food.
To what extent is the presumption that women have a comparative advantage in housework justified?
Its been historically a gender role. Since men are naturally stronger than women, harder outside tasks were designated. Leaving easier, inside housework for the women.
“Gender Wage Gap Shrinks”
Video describes how the gender wage gap is closing in, when the 2010 second quarter reports that women make 83 cents per every $1 men make. Back in 2000, women made 76 cents per every dollar men made and in 1979, women made 62 cents. The reason is not a positive one. With the economy in recession, many men have lost their jobs. This allows women to come up and prosper, for the first time, more than men. Some women are even making more than men. Education has provided more power, gender gap has decrease and women are taking less time off after pregnancy. After all is said and done, there is still a gap and progress still needs to be made.
“State of the American Women”
Time magazine has created a poll to survey how men and women feel about a womens stronger role in America. Four out of ten women in the households are the main bread winners. For the first time, men share womens views on how difficult it is to balance work and household duties. The survey showed that women felt more comfortable with women earning more than men. 65% of the women agreed, while 61% of the men felt the same way. Women are changing the way things are in workplace and in the home.
