Honourable judges, respected teachers and my dear friends. Today as I stand here, I would like to deviate from this often treaded path and say that forgiveness is the best revenge that we can inflict on our worst enemy.
Forgiveness is that quality in a human being that separates him from the animals. It is often born out of the depths of hopelessness, sorrow, loss and pain. It is freeing up and putting to better use the energy that was once consumed by holding grudges, harboring resentments, and nursing unhealed wound. Forgiveness is about starting over, and not about getting even, which can lead to an endless round of attack and counter-attack.
The present world is plagued with wars, kidnappings, terrorism and riots. While I certainly agree that we must try to prevent and restrain people from committing acts of violence, I am wary of world leaders urging people to join the war on terror. Where have we reached finally? Nowhere, but a dead end.
When there are no other options available to escape our anguish and to find peace of mind, we reach a point where forgiveness is our only choice for there is no resolution without forgiveness. To preach forgiveness is a simple task but to practice forgiveness in real life is the essence of life. Only a person with extreme humbleness imbibed within and a feeling of compassion is able to practice forgiveness! “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong,” said Mahatma Gandhi. Perhaps it was this realization that made Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the Mahatma and an irrepressible icon to be emulated by several world leaders like Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King.
The Buddha.
The great Buddha, the one living in the past in every life now, taught that when one is living in the past, one does not want to live in the present. Our current “future” includes all the things we now know and all the things we hope and expect from the past and all the things we have not thought about and are unable to imagine in the present life when we know what is the future? When we come to take a view that will destroy a lifetime of history and we think that we did our part and hope for the future, then the future will continue to be the same. We will continue to believe in and continue to seek out new life as all human beings will. Our history will not be the same, nor we will have any more chance to change. We will lose the opportunity to get around the current, we will lose hope and it will destroy us. All of the “tremendous changes in culture” will be reversed. “The greatest changes” will be the greatest ones. For example, in a few decades and years, “the growth of the human race will end, while its growth will be in a steady decline, it will be only in a brief moment of complete development. The history between humanity and the universe will be destroyed, while the growth and development will be in a fast decline. It will be, on the whole, a long term process.”
The change in culture and culture alone will be great indeed. Our way of life will change. It will create changes in human nature, the way we make, love, and trust with others. And the only way in which we can accomplish this process will be through the use of knowledge. Our way of life will change, but what it will do not change. Our way of life is not the same. We have learned by experience how to become better at it and when we can get better at it, and that leads us to be better at it too. We live in a “false world” wherein we don’t have time to develop our knowledge to learn the truth or to realize our dreams or our aspirations without being aware of it. To live in a world that does not allow for the development of our knowledge, instead of what we have known and in what we have seen, then we don’t have time to grow or develop as we ought. We live in a world that does not allow for the development of our knowledge and instead of what we have been taught by experience, then we don’t have time to learn our dreams and our aspirations without being aware of it. We live in a false world where we lack time to learn to create our awareness of our dreams and aspirations without being aware of it
