The entertainment business has tainted societies view on correctional officers and the United States prison system. In a society where people are educated about prisons and correctional officers from Hollywoods producers and writers who spend immense time writing scripts for movies and television shows. Correctional officers are often portrayed as the “bad guys”. The entertainment business frequently depicts correction officers as corrupt, inhuman, ignorant aggressors who take advantage of helpless convicts who have no civil rights. People often envision inmates in prison to be evil and immoral delinquents who are incapable of living a civilized life. Often times being a prisoner is glamourized in the entertainment business.

In the book Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing, by Ted Conover he describes his experiences in Ossining, New York correctional system, Sing Sing the maximum security prison. Conover was able to have a first hand account of an undercover world behind prison walls that is uncommonly spoken about. Conover spent a year working as a “newjack”, a new correctional officer. After completing the training academy he was assigned to work in Sing Sing, where most new officers spend their first months in the field.
