A Far Cry from Africa
vs This poem is telling us that a far cry from Africa”, he describes Africa as far meaning that St. Lucia where Derek Walcott grew up was far from Africa. He could hear the cry in the far from the winds that blow towards the island. Walcott highlights the various ways Africans were treated and how it is very inhuman and inconsiderate by the European men described by Walcott as ” drunken officer to be so cruel to the African people. He also states that the European wants to be the high level people and want to enslave Africa and its people.
In the last stanza, we find it very interesting. Walcott feels guilt; he is confused in what to do since he is a mixture of African and European cultures. African symbolising the slaves while Europeans symbolising the British Colonel.
