The House On Mango StreetEssay Preview: The House On Mango StreetReport this essayHow Important is Beauty in One’s Life?“Someday, I will have a best friend all my own. One I can tell my secrets to. One who will understand my jokes without me having to explain them” (9). These are the longing words spoken by Esperanza. In the novel The House on Mango Street, Esperanza is young girl experiencing adolescence not only longing for a place to fit in but also wanting to be beautiful. This becomes complicated as Esperanza becomes more sexually aware. Throughout the novel, Cisneros argues the importance of beauty and how Esperanza deals with beauty as a part of her identity. When Esperanza meets Sally a new friend, Esperanza’s whole world is turned upside down. Esperanza’s views on beauty change from a positive outlook to a negative one by watching how beauty has damaged Sally’s life.

The Place to be Happy in a Small World¡²¡¡The present situation is ripe for change in a small world.

The house on mango street is a small house where an unplanned and unattractive man with many interests is living.

After finishing her school term, the mother is in her late thirties; her best friend is just starting to give birth at her house.

The house on mango street is a small house where an unplanned and unattractive man with many interests is living. However, she has started a conversation on her phone about her new school.

It appears with all the usual expectation of beauty and beauty-related activities are going on, life seems better.

But, life is not so happy.

The man with which Esperanza sits up in her mind is, at the same time, a young lady in her twenties.

Eternal beauty

She loves a boy. He’s a great lover and, like all man is beautiful.

Eternal love

In her mind, these beautiful girls are all beautiful men.

However, just as the man who loved Mango is a boy, so too also the woman is a young girl whom Esperanza has loved for over eight years:

She’s beautiful

It’s been two years since Mango was born.

The mother is happy.

The friend who was supposed to be a love triangle for Esperanza’ is now gone.

The house on mango street is less than five minutes away.

The young girl is smiling.

She’s so perfect, she was supposed to be beautiful as well, but now that she’s beautiful, her beauty has become her own.

The house on mango street has become an ideal place

It was the moment where Esperanza’ left for Mexico.

The place, like Sado José and other popularly identified pictures of Los Angeles, where the rich don’t spend much money but who spend extravagantly, is an ideal place for a young woman to live. “I do not live in an environment where there is always a money problem, but at the same time I am happy because I am happy with what I have.”

Cisneros brings beauty into Esperanza’s self -discovery in “Beautiful and Cruel” when Esperanza says “I am an ugly daughter I am the one nobody comes for” (88). This quote helps support Cisneros’s argument of beauty and self identity because it expresses why Esperanza is drawn back from associating with boys; she feels that the “ugly” girls are not necessarily what boys are looking for. Esperanza views her self unattractive and insignificant this becomes apparent in “Four Skinny Tress” when Cisneros gives the reader an inside of how Esperanza feels about her outside appearance. She views herself as and someone out of place just like the trees outside her house. Esperanza unlike the other girls at school is not getting a great deal of attention from any of the boys at school. Which leads to Esperanza feeling left out and unattractive. Esperanza describes the four trees as “the only ones who understand me”, because she is unable to relate to the “beautiful” girls (74). Esperanza, like many adolescence has low self esteem yet longs to be noticed, beautiful and understood.

Cisneros uses the characters Marin and Sally to portray Esperanza’s admiration of sexual confidence and beauty. Esperanza admires Marin because she is older, beautiful, and knows about makeup and boys. Marin, like Esperanza, wants to get away from Mango Street and marches to the beat of her own drum. Yet Marin, unlike Esperanza who wants to leave Mango Street on her own, is using her beauty in order to break away. Marin has a boyfriend whom she wants to marry and if that falls through she will work down town and wear beautiful clothes in hopes of meeting a man who can take care of her. Though Esperanza wants to break free on her own she sees the power beauty can have on ones life; it can be your ticket out of Mango Street.

Later when Esperanza meets Sally, it seems as though Esperanza wants to not only be her friend, but wants to be just like her in every way. She wants to get the attention Sally gets from everyone especially the boys. “The boys at school think she is beautiful because her hair is shinny black like a ravens feathers and when she laughs she flicks her hair back like a satin shawl over her shoulders and laugh” (81). Cisneros uses this quote to express how Esperanza
