In todays world, technology advances so quickly that sometimes its hard to keep up. When it comes to cell phones, that couldnt be more true. Now a day, most phones are smart phones, or phones that have advanced capabilities compared to other phones that are primarily used just to make calls. Two major companies that are competing for market share are Google and Apple. Google created an operating system used on a variety of phones called Android. Apple has different variations of its own phone, the latest being iPhone 4, with the same operating system, iOS. With the mass sales of phones with both operating systems, its important to understand how they are different. Three main aspects on how both operating systems are different are availability, capabilities, and ease of use.

Both Apples iOS and Googles Android are available to anyone who wants it. The only difference between the availability of the two is that iOS is only available on Apples phones, their iPhones. Android is available to any phone maker who want to put it on their phone. This includes Samsung, HTC, and LG, and Motorola to name a few. Android can be found on many phones on all four major cell phone service companies, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T. Apple only had the iPhone available to AT&T until recently, when they allowed Verizon to carry their latest iPhone 4 model.

Android and iOS have advanced capabilities not found on ordinary phones. Thats why phones carrying the operating systems are considered “smart phones”. The operating systems have the capabilities to have small programs called apps added to them. Some apps are only available to Android, some only to iOS, and some are available on both. Also, both operating systems have exclusive capabilities available only to it. An example of this being syncing music. While both operating systems allow users to load and play music, only the iPhone can be synced with iTunes, due to the fact both are owned by Apple. This is an advantage for people who use iTunes to manage their music and also own an iPhone, but an inconvenience for owners of phones with Android because their music cannot be easily added or managed.

The two operating systems Android and iOS are both user friendly, and both have their own perks and downfalls. iOS seems to have all options and settings in one place, while Androids are scrambled among different menus. iOS doesnt seem to have a good track record when it comes to compatibility with other software or even phones, while Android does because of its universal. When exchanging information between phones, iOS works best with an iPhone because it uses the same operating system.

The increased use of smart phones has led to the innovation of new technology. Included in that is the creation of the Google made Android operating system and
