Art history has revolved around six various criticisms, Psychoanalysis, Postcolonialism, Marxism, Feminism, Historicism, and Cultural Studies. People have used these techniques to criticize most art pieces known to man. The piece I will be criticizing is the “Marilyn 1962” by Andy Warhol, which depicted actress Marilyn Monroe in Warhols famous “Pop Art”. While this piece falls under several schools of criticism, the school I chose to criticize this piece is Feminism.

Feminism came about in the early 18th century, but grew to its height in the 1960s, right when Warhols piece came about. Feminists wanted women to have an equal stance in society. They saw how men were represented in the world, as leaders and role models, and believed that women were just as important. Not only did they emphasize how important women should be in society, they also pointed out the negative depictions of women wherever they could. Feminists would look for pieces of literature and art to nitpick any negative connotation involving the female gender to promote change. Feminists also promoted several female artists and authors in this era.

Feminism is an important school of criticism due to the importance in the history of not only the arts, but society in general. Feminism brought equality among women in the arts and allowed for equal opportunity in society as public figures. If it werent for Feminism as a school of criticism, womens arts would be non-existent in todays world.
