It was founded by M.H de Young and therefore, has been named after him.  It was originally intended to be a Fine Arts museum and had been an extension building for the pavilion California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894 at the Golden Gate Park.  The museum had been established in the year 1895 and had been subjected to architectural redesign and reconstruction several times. In 1949, the museum’ concrete ornaments began to crumble and fall off and therefore, were removed completely. During the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, the original building had been damaged completely. In 2000s, the new building had been proposed and designed and had been completed in 2005.  The building has perforated copper texture that is dramatic and with the help of light filtering to replicate the texture.  This is achieved through the tree tops. The copper is blended with green plants in order to provide a unique and diverse surrounding to visitors and tourists.  The design focuses on balancing the natural and the artificial element environment in a graceful manner.

As visitors and tourists enter the site of the new de Young Museum, they can see the public garden with sculptures, an overhanging roof with a terrace and a special garden for children. The garden that has been designed specifically for children has a landscape that is responsible for joining the building and its environment by four sides directly. The site has several sculptures that include sphinxes from its original design, palm trees and Pool of Enchantment.  The landscape has ferns, plants and palm trees that were further beautified with sandstone and redwood.  The site ambience has been designed to welcome its visitors. The main entrance has a covered walkway with cover texture from the central garden, which leads to the living room that has rich sandstone floors. This area gives access to the exhibition halls of the museum. The drawings together with elements such as triangles and parallelograms have been done to provide an enthralling and alive atmosphere to the visitors. There is a long staircase that provides access to terraces and gardens of the museum.  Other staircase leads to the second floor, which has exhibition halls.  The sloping roof is present in the southwest corner, which closes in the form of a projection. This projection projects itself on the terrace of the café. The terrace goes into the Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden, which is located near the Japanese Tea Garden. There is tower on the northeast corner. There is a promenade between the front side of museum and Music Concourse, where visitors can observe glass trees and green grass.
