One of the best known facts about Canada is that it has an abundant amount of natural resources, from timber, to some of the best seafood, and Canada is also one of the world’s biggest mineral sources. Another fact that Canada is well known for is its variation of landscape. Rolling hills, valleys, plateaus, and high mountain peaks can all be found in Canada. But how did these formations in the land get there? What event within the earth shaped the land that many people call home? Canada is one of the oldest known pieces of land in geological history. The shape of its land provides information to tell geologist just how old the land is and what life was like millions and millions of years ago. Geology is a very important aspect of everyday life, it has to do with anything that involves the earth, the weather, movement of the earth, and so much more. All these events that happen within a geological perspective are very important, it is important to known what is happening in the sky above us, or the earth beneath us. Canada being full of geological aspects it is important to make sure that the geology of Canada is being studied. In 1841 the Legislature of the Providences of Canada decided to start and Geological Survey of the Providences. (Vodden, and Frieday) This Survey group follows very similar guidelines to the Geological Survey of America also known as GSA. The first director of Canada’s Geological Survey was William Edmond Logan who was appointed director in April of 1842. William Edmond Logan appointed the surveys headquarters to be in Montreal, Quebec. (Vodden, and Frieday) The beginning of the field work for this new geological survey group started studying all over eastern Canada, in areas such as Nova Scotia, and the Quebec Peninsula. Canada is a large amount of land that is filled with so much history, and much exploring for future. One of the oldest known parts of Canada is the famous Canadian Shield, the shield can also be known as the Precambrian Shield or the Laurentian Plate. Both of these names come from the rocks history, Precambrian being the time period which dates back to 4.5 billion years ago. It is the oldest known part of the North American crustal plate and contains fossils of algae and bacteria, and is composed mostly of igneous granitic rock. The Canadian Shield covers just about half of Canada, most of Greenland, and Canada’s southern neighbors, The United States. The Canadian Shield covers [pic 7][pic 8]
