Try to imagine this world without entertainment. Impossible, right? Entertainment can come in various forms: music, games, movies, theatre, etc.
Movies and plays are viewed as two of the most similar types of entertainment, but they also have drastic differences.
Plays are seen by a live audience. This makes the whole experience of seeing a play more intimate for not only the audience, but for the actors also. Since a play is done live, every performance has a slight difference each time. There will never be two performances that are the same within any given production. However, movies can only be viewed in a movie theatre on a projection screen or in the home if the homeowner has proper equipment. You cannot see a movie live. No matter how many times people watch “Ferris Buellers Day Off,” or “Batman,” or whatever it is they prefer, a movie will be exactly the same as you watched it the last time.
Some plays are known for the length of their recorded history. Greeks started producing theatrical productions around 500 B.C.E. And Shakespearean plays have been around for centuries which were performed many times and are still performed today. On the other hand, movies never existed until the early 1900s. The history of movies is on its way. There a lot of good classic movies, but it will be a while before they come ancient.
Typically, live theater production costs are a lot less than movies. Many plays only require one set which usually can be altered to change scenes if it is needed. Publicity is also extremely less for plays than it is for movies, as plays only can draw in a limited number of people, whereas any movie at anytime can be watched anywhere. Movies also cost more because of their elaborate stunts, different locations, and special effects as plays dont apply to those aspects.
