Carnell Professor of Psychology at Temple University . Dr. Steinberg has taught previously at Cornell University , the University of California at Irvine , and the University of Wisconsin at Madison . He was educated at Vassar College , where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with honors and distinction in psychology in 1974; and at Cornell University , where he received his Ph.D. in human development and family studies in 1977. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, has been a Faculty Scholar of the William T. Grant Foundation, and is currently Director of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Adolescent Development and Juvenile Justice . Dr. Steinberg is President-Elect of the Division of Developmental Psychology of the American Psychological Association and a Past President of the Society for Research on Adolescence, the major professional organization of social and behavioral scientists interested in adolescent growth and development. He has been the recipient of numerous honors, including the John P. Hill Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Study of Adolescence, given by the Society for Research on Adolescence, the Society for Adolescent Medicines Gallagher Lectureship, and the American Psychological Associations Urie Bronfenbrenner Award for Lifetime Contribution to Developmental Psychology in the Service of Science and Society. In 2005, he will be one of the American Psychological Associations Distinguished Scientist Lecturers.
A nationally recognized expert on psychological development during adolescence, Dr. Steinbergs research has focused on a range of topics in the study of contemporary adolescence, including parent-adolescent relationships, adolescent employment, high school reform, and juvenile justice. His work has been funded by a variety of public and private organizations, including the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Justice, the MacArthur Foundation, the William T. Grant Foundation, and the Lilly Endowment. Dr. Steinberg served as a member of the National Academy of Sciences Panel on the Health Implications of Child Labor, is a member of the Committee on Adolescent Health and Development of the National Academies, and has been a frequent consultant to state and federal agencies and lawmakers on child labor, secondary
c. Dr. Steinberg started his political career in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1932. Prior to President Roosevelt, he ran for a few state offices and won the Democratic nomination in 1936. During the first nine years he served in the Congress on both sides of a political aisle before becoming a prominent national political strategist. In 1948 and 1950, he became the first Asian-American representative to run for governor of Ohio. In the late 1950s, with his wife, she ran for governor, defeating Democrat William Corcoran. He served four terms as Governor in 1960 and in 1962, before returning to public life. In 1991, he served four terms as Senator from Texas after serving four terms as Senator from Florida. In 1989, Dr. Steinberg led a Congressional campaign on behalf of the Texas Public School Act. In 1985, it became the law of the state of Texas that minority students in public colleges and universities must have a B.A. in education from accredited or accredited public universities. In 1998 he served a four-year term as the acting Chairman of the United States Education Board. In 1990, while serving as the chairman of the American Educational Trustee Association, he and Mr. Trump met in a closed-door session at the White House. In 1997 Mr. Steinberg founded the National Organization of Parents, which aims to educate children about the problems of children’s schooling.
Dr. Steinberg is President of H.L. and W.E. Norton (CAS Consulting). Born in New York City in 1945, he graduated from Boston College in 1979, and received a M.A. from King’s College London. In 1992, he became a trustee of the Manhattan Beach Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to bringing upward mobility to the lives of those who have difficulty growing up with kids. As a student, he received an M.B. in accounting from Harvard University, then he returned to Harvard College and his M.A.’s at the University of California Los Angeles. During the early to mid-1990’s, at around the same time he worked with the Young Americans for Liberty, Mr. Steinberg wrote several autobiographical stories. In 2000 he published a book, “The Mind of a Man: Exploring the American Brain with a Personal Autobiography” (publication on the Web at www.hltefoundation.org).
The Future: A Brief History of Dr. Steinberg Dr. Steinberg was born in 1937 in Hamburg, Germany. He completed his education in the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he majored. During the 1940s, he attended St. Thomas University, where he graduated with a Juris Doctorate in history in 1959, and as a professor of literature at St. Mary’s College from 1965 to 1969. In 1968, he took up law school, and became an Associate of Legal Counsel in Manhattan and St. Louis (until he married Helen Schlesinger) between 1970 and 1977. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Organization for Marriage and has been the director of the Institute of Contemporary Counsel in St. Louis since the 1960s. He lives in London. He is the author’s co-producer and co-pilot of “Love for the Real Estate,” the documentary about a “giant man” who helped convince a judge to grant his ex-girlfriend his “heart of gold.” From 1990 to 1993, he and his wife of 28 years, Karen began taking up the practice of personal law practice (in addition to the “traditional” law practice of the legal profession). Since 1992, they have been working with attorneys across the country as well as providing support services. At least 5 couples have joined his legal team. Dr. Steinberg is now living in the same apartment he purchased in 2003. He has two children with Patricia and Lela Schwartz. Together, he and Patricia have one full-time employee. Their current home, in Park West, Brooklyn, is located in the middle of a high-rise development of the Flatiron Building at 101 North 3rd St., with two large apartment complexes that may be located near the building.
