Emotional Intelligence
Many people are unable to express and cope with their emotions. Because people lack certain social skills and tend to have low self esteems, this makes them vulnerable to rejection and criticism. People of this nature have low emotional intelligence or EQ.
According to Karen Duffy Grover, author of Psychology of Living: Adjustment, Growth, and Behavior Today, emotional intelligence is the ability to regulate ones own emotions and to be empathic for others emotions ( 2005, 221). Individuals who have emotional intelligence usually tend to work well in social environments because one can handle ones self in social situations. Those who lack this ability are most likely prone to having low self esteem and get discouraged when placed in a social environment. There are two aspects of emotional IQ, interpersonal and intrapersonal. Interpersonal is the ability to recognize specific emotions with an empathetic base and managing relationships. For example, an individual must be able to take the perspective of others and understand the roles emotions play in relationships and friendships by being positive. Intrapersonal is knowing, managing and motivating ones self with emotions. This is the trait of having a positive attitude toward ones own emotions and knowing that specific emotions serve a purpose to help one cope with difficult situations.
Emotional Intelligence contains five characteristics and individual should maintain to be emotionally literate. The first characteristic is knowing ones own emotions and being able to maintain them. A person who has Emotional knowledge must be able to identify the emotion or emotions being felt, and must also be able to maintain stability when experienced. This is known as self awareness. The second trait of EQ is mood management which is the ability to manage ones own emotion and the ability to control impulses. A person must be able to react appropriately to all their emotions. The third characteristic is the ability to motivate ones self or self motivation. Self motivation enables one to gather all their feelings and direct it towards a personal goal. Empathy is recognizing others emotions. Its important that an individual be able to recognize others emotions by paying close attention to the verbal and nonverbal signals of other individuals. The last characteristic is managing relationships. This trait consists of the ability to handle interaction, negotiation, and conflict resolutions. Individuals who lack have difficulty managing relationships are unable to be sensitive to others emotions.
